As a concerned life-long citizen of Ontario and an avid lover of nature I am highly against the current and any future proposals to develop the Greenbelt for anything other than a natural environment. The Greenbelt is considered a prevention of urban development and sprawl on environmentally sensitive land in the province. Altering the footprint directly defeats the purpose. It’s a slap in the Greenbelt’s face. As well, this is a slippery slope, as it sets precedence. Sure, might only be 15 acres this time. Then another 15. Then 20. Suddenly we are losing 100s of acres of precious land. Ontario is huge; there are MANY under-developed towns and areas which the Premier could focus on. Let’s not forget that there is more than just the GTA in this world. What good is adding 50,000 homes to an area already crippled with traffic congestion and lack-luster public transit? This plan is short sighted, unethical, and most-likely criminal when we start looking at the behind-closed-doors deals being made. Nothing good comes from developing the Greenbelt into living areas. Nothing. I urge all of these “elected” officials to do better. Stop caring for yourself and your next election. Start caring about the future you are creating now. Be a world leader, not an embarrassment.
