I am vehemently opposed to this proposal to remove lands from the Greenbelt Plan. The Premier and his government have broken their promise to the people of Ontario if they proceed with this proposal. We need to preserve Greenbelt Plan lands. Those lands are important for ecological and agricultural reasons. With climate change, food security has become a critical issue. It is short sighted to take such steps. (Not unlike the Harris government’s decision to sell the 407 for short term budgetary reasons.)
The fact that developers some how knew to purchase lands contemplated by the proposal before it was announced, raises further issues of possible improprieties. This needs to be thoroughly investigated before this proposal can proceed.
The fact that a number of urban river systems, that are already well protected from development, and a small part of the Paris Galt Moraine, are to be added is woefully inadequate. They should be added to the Plan in any event, but that in no way justifies the removal of other Greenbelt lands.
