I have been born and lived in Ontario all my life. No issue has effected me more in all my 73 years than the disaster that man's wasteful ways is bringing upon us, climate change, which will render this planet which we all depend on for our lives and the lives of our children and grandchildren, as unlivable.
The Cap and Trade Act of 2018 is Ontario's way of trying to cut pollution and giving ordinary citizens incentives to reduce their carbon use.
The planned cancellation of the Cap and Trade Act with no program in place to reduce carbon emissions is a very short-sighted and uneconomic decision, because our partnership with the vibrant economy of California in Cap and Trade would have brought many economic benefits to our province. We will have no program to mitigate the effects of climate change, and a program to fight climate change is needed now. Climate change is not going to happen at some mysterious time in the future. Climate change is here and now, as evidenced by the increasing number of extreme weather events, flooding, increasing temperatures world-wide, etc. Just ask the insurance industry if you don't believe me.
There is no time to waste and delay only worsens an already deteriorating situation. Bill 4 cannot be passed until Ontario has a well- thought- out climate policy to reduce carbon emissions and to return the benefits of this to Ontario citizens to encourage them to reduce their own carbon footprints. This is not a back-burner issue to be delayed , but must be dealt with rationally and with thoughtful urgency.
