I strongly oppose in favour of the proposed changes to the Greenbelt Plan that would remove or redesignate 15 parcels of land and add lands to the Paris Galt Moraine area. Opening up access to developers to green spaces will have environmental ramifications we can't afford. Moreover expanded development and sprawl is not a solution to housing in the GTA - it once again prioritizes a profit based housing model and replicates the strategies that have gotten us to the crisis we are in today. All levels of provincial, federal, and municipal government need to work together to prioritize increasing density and more affordable rental properties made within the development zones already available. Tax incentives should be paid to all developers and private home owners who create rent geared to income housing on their property. Every new development must include low-income and moderate income-housing, foreign investment should be disallowed, and all developers should be forced to make and current housing more affordable, gearing rent to income. Affordable housing should be the only priority - new and redesignated affordable units and increased density of low and moderate income units in high-income areas will help stabilize current housing prices to create more affordability for all. The proposed changes to the Greenbelt are a thinly veiled land grab, environmentally disastrous for an area that needs as much green space and carbon absorption as possible, and a disingenuous solution to increasing housing. Protect the Greenbelt and focus on affordable housing in current developments.
