It's very distressing that this plan makes no reference to fish as the larval hosts of Unionid mussels. In the Ottawa River, besides the common species, juvenile Sturgeon are the presumed host of the COSEWIC-Endangered Obovaria olivaria, and Aplodinotus is the host of the almost-as-rare Potamilus alatus and Leptodea fragilis. Because of its low calcium levels, the Ottawa River doesn't support Zebra Mussels in large numbers, so a big part of its conservation role is the intact Unionid fauna it sustains, and the fish are an essential element of that support.
