We are writing this note to express our deep concern over the proposed recommendations from the MNRF regarding anchoring on navigable waterways in the Province. Specifically, the recommendation proposes to restrict anchoring within 300 metres of any developed shoreline. We are to understand that this means any dock or structure on the shoreline. This proposal if it were to become law and applied strictly would eliminate many and likely most of the anchorages that sailboats and power boats have used for many decades that stretch back before the second world war (One estimate has approximately 90% of Georgian Bay and the North Channel of Huron excluded from safe anchoring). Boaters would be forced to leave safe protected anchorages with the only option in many cases being deep water, exposure to wind and waves and place them in or uncomfortably close to shipping lanes and active boat traffic.

Many, many Ontario citizens enjoy cruising on Ontario's magnificent coastlines. It is our belief as citizens of the province that we should be able to continue an activity that has been enjoyed by generations. We also believe it is our right as citizens of Canada to safely navigate our waterways and to safely anchor in protected waters to ensure the safety of our crew and vessel. The MNRF recommendation to force cruisers out of Ontario anchorages is short sighted and should be reconsidered and dropped from any future legislation.
