I am strongly opposed to floating container homes on environmental, equity, and aesthetic grounds.
If they were to proliferate on Ontario's lakes and rivers, they would inevitably worsen the environment. Water quality would suffer due to untreated waste water.
They would be inequitable and unfair. Since they do not pay property taxes, cottagers and other landowners (who do pay property taxes) would quite rightly see the obvious lack of fairness and double standard. People who own waterfront properties have worked hard to save to buy those properties and to enjoy the beauty of Ontario's lakes and rivers. Floating accommodations would represent a slap in the face to those owners. They would effectively reduce the attractiveness and property values of those cottages.
Finally, a proliferation of large, unsightly floating homes on Ontario would render our beautiful lakes and rivers an ugly mess. Ontario is blessed with its natural bounty of fresh water; let's not tarnish a provincial environmental wonder.
Therefore, I strongly support the Ontario Government's proposed regulatory changes to make floating accommodations illegal.
