Comments regarding the proposal from Dwayne Andrew Wilson operating as The Stool Bus (ERO number 019-6708, Ministry reference number 5619-CN5RQZ)
We are against the proposal for the following reasons:
1). Sewage is contaminated with organic and inorganic pollutants (heavy metals, pharmaceutical residues, dioxins and microplastics and high concentrations of E-coli and Salmonella. Spreading sewage on farmland is not desirable for environmental health.
2). The disposal site is located on lighter ground, which has a very good penetration and therefore resulting in a very high potential risk for groundwater and surface water contamination.
3). The rural area relies heavenly on well water and their respective well’s capture zone for replenishment. Ground water or surface water contamination from the sewage disposal site imposes an immediate risk to the health of families and their livestock.
4). The odor is unbearable during spreading onto the fields and for the following weeks in a very large surrounding area. Since The Stool Bus can spread sewage during the majority of the year, the enjoyment of living in rural area is at stake.
5). Many countries have legislation in place that greatly limit or prohibit the use of sewage on land. There are sewage treatment techniques on the market that include different steps, depending on the desired end use (energy and/or nutrient recovery). The Government of Canada has clearly indicated to protect human health and the environment. The Stool Bus proposal does not follow that concept.
6). All farmers who have livestock and/or spreading manure on their fields are strictly regulated by the Nutrient Management Plan /Act. Farmers can only apply a certain amount of manure on the field that the crop can extract in that growing season. In the detailed Nutrient management plan the following information is required , but not limited to sufficient manure storage (in case spreading is not possible), kind of field application, application rates, regular soil sampling, crop rotation plan, runoff prevention methods etcetera, odour prevention plan None of the above are mentioned as part of this application.
We would highly recommend that the application from The Stool Bus does NOT receive an approval.
