Please do not go ahead with the planned amendments to the Mining Act. It is important to the state of our natural environment that mining activities do not result in polluted groundwater, surface water and air quality. Animal and plant habitat in the areas around mines should be protected.
When mines are no longer being used, it is vital that the areas around them be rehabilitated by the mining companies. The mining companies make the profits and it would be wrong for them to leave rehabilitation and cleaning of any dangerous leavings to the taxpayers in the area.
Mining companies should proceed with mining only after they have posted financial securities to cover any costs after the mine closes, with a plan for closure in place, and with plans that are acceptable to the communities affected for rehabilitation of the mines.
