I’m NOT in favor of The Stool Bus proposal, because:
• He is allowed to spread sewage most of the year. The smell will be unbearable for a very long time since the sewage is not worked into the ground. Farmers apply manure (not sewage) onto their fields and incorporating it into the ground after application and plant their crop right away after this. So that all the nutrients are available to the crops.
• Spreading untreated sewage will leave unwanted chemical residues and pathogens onto the fields in a very high concentration which will create water pollution. Air pollution is another problem, since sewage releases volatile organic components, greenhouse gasses and inorganic pollutants into the atmosphere.
• The site location is lighter ground, which drains very well, so surface water contamination will happen. Nothing is mentioned in his proposal about collecting run-offs and/or spills. Nothing in his proposal is mentioned about preventative measurements that should be in place, as well as 24 / 7 days monitoring system.
• St. Clair Conservation encourage farmers and rural landowners within their watershed to uptake and implement best management practices (BMPs) and stewardship of the fields and watersheds to build strong soil health, conservation, and water quality. None of the actions as proposed by The Stool Bus fall under the category of Best Management Practices.
• Excessive rainfall will cause flooding and immediately will negatively impact the quality of surface water.
• According to the proposal, any complaints should be reported to The Stool Bus. Nothing is said about how they must deal with the complaints. Complaints should be received by an independent authority (local police, OMAFRA, Spill action centre) and followed up with a site visit, report and fines.
• Livestock operators are required to have an environmentally safe manure storage for a minimum of 180 days, so that manure only can be applied during the crop growing season.
• The Stool Bus should not be allowed to spread sewage when rain is in the forecast.
Overall the proposal from The Stool Bus should NOT be approved.
