As a Hamilton resident and citizen strongly concerned for the sustainability of our environment, I vehemently oppose this proposal of the Hamilton Golf and Country Club to take excessive amounts of our water supplies for the frivolous and utterly self-entitled purpose of maintaining a private golf course. As a Category 3 request, the amounts of water requested are clearly flagged as a significant environmental risk that should not be entertained at a point in time when we are all too aware of the rising costs of climate change. On reviewing the proposal, I find it preposterous and ridiculous that this applicant is requesting permission to draw water from January 1 - December 31 to include periods when the golf course wouldn't even be active - they are clearly seeking to gain the maximum possible benefit and permission to draw on our natural resources without any sense of logic, balance, or concern for their environmental impact. Refusing this proposal will send a much-needed message to HGCC to read the room and recognize that they, like everyone else, need to rethink how they conduct their business during a climate crisis. I strongly urge decision makers to prioritize the environment and human rights to access safe and clean water, and refuse to sell out one of the most essential means of our survival to a private corporation that clearly only cares for itself and its outdated mode of recreation.
