A new Provincial Park is an awesome idea and I love the plans for Bigwind. More needs to be done to support the park system across the province including updating the infrastructure (trailer sanitation stations, bathrooms, park offices/stores/visitor centres, etc) and increasing access for campers and day use. These parks are forgotten by every government of the day and have been underfunded and underdeveloped for decades. While I love seeing a new park in the works and am excited to visit) there needs to be a longer term plan that targets and balances environmental sustainability, infrastructure enhancements, educational opportunities, and funding enhancements that are not based on outdated funding models.
Specific to Bigwinds, I’d like to see well thought out trailer sanitation stations utilizing green technology, increase in accessible campgrounds and opportunities for seasonal campsites (with sewer hook up). This park presents a real opportunity for Parks to be innovative and demonstrate leadership in balancing environmental protection with human use. Best practices from around the world and a GBA+ inspired needs assessment that reflects the modern world and diversity of park users would be useful in informing decisions and initiatives. Frankly the new Park represents an paradigm shift in how we can manage our parks and really push some innovative ideas. PPP initiatives would also be great to explore.
Good luck with the new park!!!
