I am supportive of a regualr, mandated review of Crown forest manuals every 10 years. However, I would suggest that even 10 years might be too long for some aspects as we grapple with climate change and its effects. Five years is becoming the normal standard for reviewing policies in other aspects of the natural environment, because change is happening faster than was predicted. This is especially so for northern parts of Canada where change is accelerating at about twice the pace of the rest of the country.
Broadly, I welcome the new interest in First Nations and independent forest planning in their traditional lands, some of which may not be ceded, subject to Treaty. The status of such lands and Treaties should be a direct consideration in whether any rules can apply at all, or whether this manual should apply. This is rather absent from the discussion, but this is the time, with Truth and Reconciliation, it should be open and transparent.
