Please deny this application (sand washing No 019-7446)
For over 35 years, my family has owned a recreational property located less than 10 km. from this site. We have enjoyed the pure clean water as drinking water and in streams sustaining nearby forests and streams. We have observed how so many more people have visited the area to enjoy its precious natural assets. And we have learned how we can thank the aquifers of the vulnerable Oro Moraine for so much of this.
I understand that your mandate, under section 0.1 of the Water Resources Act, is to “provide for the conservation, protection and management of Ontario’s waters and for their efficient and sustainable use, in order to promote Ontario’s long-term environmental, social and economic well-being.”
How does granting a permit for this company to extract 454 litres of pure Oro Moraine water per minute, 24 hours/day, up to 200 days/year for up to 10 years – to use for aggregate washing - do that?
I also understand that, if all the existing permits just along the Horseshoe Valley Road were to pump at their permitted full capacity for a year, a huge volume of water (possibly the equivalent of Lake Simcoe) would be removed (see December 11, 2022 Orillia Matters column by award-winning naturalist David Hawke). Add to that the unprecedented demands of new development in the area, and the vulnerability of the moraine, how can you possibly grant this application?
The onus is on you to make a decision consistent with the purpose of the Water Resources Act. Would granting this application be consistent with the “conservation and protection” objective of the Act? Can you provide the public with facts to show that the addition of the water extraction at issue in this application does not (in the words of the Water Resources Act) jeopardize Ontario’s “long-term environmental, social and economic well-being”? To assure us that the precious (and irreplaceable) Oro Medonte moraine will continue to provide pure water to sustain us, the forests, and the outflowing streams in future?
If not, you must deny this application.
