I have been a cottager at Minaki Ontario on the Winnipeg River system for 77 years.Never have I seen such degradation of our water ways as I am seeing now.What once were beautiful small shallow bays with lovely water lilies ,home to fish ,painted turtles and aquatic birds we now see Flowering Rush which has choked out everything else.
Additionally,we lost our boat propeller in the Rush due to it twisting around the bottom of our motor.
The shoreline where we attach our floating dock is so replete with Rush we scarcely can dock our boat without risk of having another prop spin off into the lake.Swimming off our dock has become difficult now due to the Rush proliferation.
This invasive species is nigh in impossible now to eradicate and is expanding every year.
I urge you to take this matter ery seriously by doing two things:
1.Categorize it as a Prohibited Species not merely a Restricted one
2.Take immediate action to remove and or eradicate it from our water ways .
Flowering Rush is an eye sore ,a threat to aquatic plants and fish,
has become a very real threat to safe boating and in a region which thrives on tourism ,is negatively affecting a significant economic engine.
Yours in ernest;
John Carlyle
