I am responding to the current "Protecting Black Ash and Its Habitat" document, with the Sept.2023 Draft Government Response.
I appreciate the current strategy:
"to limit the application of the “species protection” prohibitions in subsection 9(1) of the ESA to healthy Black Ash, those that appear to have survived exposure to EAB, located in areas of the province that have experienced significant EAB-caused mortality of ash trees."
I am familiar with the 2020 COSSARO report and the 2018 COSEWIC assessment. I had read with much concern the 2022 "Recovery Strategy for the Black Ash of Ontario" and have previously presented my concerns to the Ministry of Environment as a member of our local municipal council.
I would be interested in learning more about working:
"collaboratively to develop and implement standardized survey and monitoring programs that refine knowledge of current distribution and abundance of Black Ash in Ontario, as well as threats impacting the species..."
Yours truly, Phil W
