I have serious concerns with and do not support the proposal to remove regulatory oversight of these Waste Management activities. On Ontario’s roads we have almost daily incidents of truck and transport accidents caused by inattentive, inexperienced drivers. To think that any of these can also be vehicles carrying seriously harmful wastes that can impair individuals, communities or regional water systems is terrifying.

More terrifying is the proposal to allow businesses to self-register and ensure that source to proper disposal site compliance is undertaken is laughable at best in a sector already known to have a disgustingly low compliance rate.

If registering the transportation of several harmful waste products, is a “burden” to any company then they are in the wrong business.

I am in disagreement with the proposal regarding insurance to be carried by handlers. There is no evidence that insurers would make good with compensation for clean up and instead MECP is running a great risk of putting the cost of clean up on the citizens of Ontario rather than the companies who are hauling these materials. I for one do not feel that is my burden to bear as a taxpayer.

Shame on the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks for even thinking of such a proposal that undermines your entire mandate to protect the citizens, natural resources and health of Ontario. You need to maintain our province’s strict environmental standards not diminish them.
