I am very concerned about the proposed changes to this environmental policy. Each site in the province is unique, and a blanket approach does not deal with the different geomorphic conditions. We know from a situation like Walkerton, that toxic substances travel through the water table and can seriously affect the health of people living far from the original source of contamination. Considering that many pits are already licensed to extract below the water table, their waste storage is not compatible with the land use and environmental regulations. We are in a situation where we need more vigilance, not less. We need a strengthened Conservation Authority, not a weakened on. It is essential that we view the entirety of a system carefully, not streamline a process as though none of these factors matter.
This is, yet again, an example of government riding roughshod, not allowing careful consideration by the public on decisions that will affect our health. The government is doing everything it can to make business happy, choosing time and time again to ease things for business. Yet it is the people of the province who pay taxes, who vote, and who have ever right to safe and healthy lives. People, not corporations, are the most important constituents in Ontario.
