The information provided by the proponents do not provide the appropriate foundation for the safe design and operation of a waste disposal site.

First, there is not enough consideration to address leachate collection and management, surface water monitoring and impact mitigation. The monitoring wells proposed is not adequate.

Second, it is not reasonable to go ahead with this proposal as it poses a threat to the natural environment and to the public interest. The area is surrounded by homes and farms. It is very close to Molly’s Creek which enters the Sydenham River, known for its biodiversity.

According to the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority, more than 20 species of fish, mussels, and reptiles that live in and around the Sydenham River which are listed nationally or provincially as Species at Risk and include species of global conservation concern. For a full list of these species, visit the Conversation Authority’s website (link included with this online submission).

Third, no berm is proposed on the east side of the property, without good reason.

The watershed is the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, Lunaapeewak, and Attawandaron peoples. Therefore, their opinions must be meaningfully consulted as part of the Ministry’s consideration.

This proposal represents a threat to the natural environment.
