Once again the Ontario government is over-ruling an independent, expert body. The Ontario Energy Board instructed Enbridge Gas to stop subsidizing its plans to expand infrastructure by charging buyers of new homes for connections. The Board reviewed Enbridge's plans and argued the company's proposal would lead to "an overbuilt, underutilized gas system". We are moving away from fossil fuels! There are several communities exploring ways to get off gas. One is to have no new developments be gas ready. In my town we are exploring this option. One new development is close to having only heat pumps. The board told Enbridge to charge developers the costs of connecting new customers. Developers would definitely look for alternatives if they had to pay this cost.
I am appalled by the title of the bill. The government should lead in the fight against climate change. The title suggests that the people of Ontario will benefit from Bill 165. The big winners are Enbridge and developers (again). The losers are all of us.
When will this government recognize that climate change is costing all of us a lot and those costs are only going to go up. Forest fires, drought, floods, not to mention increased infrastructure costs are looming larger and larger. Where will the money come from? The people!
Bill 165, despite its silly name, will not help us and should not pass.
