New landfill capacity is a critical infrastructure need in Ontario. We are running out of capacity in our current facilities, and shipping far too much waste to the US. The shipping of waste across the border incurs not only environmental damage due to emissions, but wear-and-tear on our roads, increased risk of accidents on our highways, congestion on our highways, and drives up cost of waste disposal resulting in higher costs for all. Canadian waste needs to be dealt with in Canada. This facility is the kind that we need - handles a specific type of waste, has a strategy for resource recovery, and upgrades the current facility including management of methane gas release.
