As a Canadian province, Ontario is bound by the International Agreement on Trapping Standards, which prohibits the use of the proposed snares. Most European countries have long prohibited the use of snares and have adopted instead the use of more humane methods to trap threatening wildlife. Our society has evolved and it is widely known that, for example, coyotes are sentient animals whose intelligence rivals that of domestic dogs. Since it would be considered inhumane - and illegal - to use the proposed snares on domestic dogs because they inflict inhumane torture, the Ontario government has the responsibility to prohibit their altogether. As such I implore the Ontario government to immediately render illegal all sale and use of all/any snares. This new rule should be accompanied by a commitment to enforce this rule - e.g. Ontario Government officers would visit hunting and trapping retailers, as well as farmers and trappers, to make sure that snares are no longer sold by the former and used by the latter. The Ontario government should at the same time allow only and promote the sale and use of methods allowed under the International Agreement on Trapping Standards.
