As a first step to any amendments to Trapping, the province of Ontario needs to publish the research findings it references on the ERO page so that the public can make scientifically informed comments. We believe trapping guidelines should not be created by the fur industry, but rather by up to date, peer- reviewed, scientific evidence that prioritized the welfare of animals in the trapping process.
Please note, under the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards, which Canada is a party to, relaxed cable restraints and snares are not certified traps! Scientific research has shown that killing and restraining snares result in negative animal welfare outcomes for both target and non-target animals, so should not be used in Ontario, or anywhere else in the world. Consequently, many countries have banned the use of snares completely and we believe Ontario should do so immediately.
In addition, farmers should be encouraged and shown how to use non-lethal, predator friendly, farming methods that do not require or include the trapping of wildlife.
