The Provincial Government has no grounds to make policy changes that impact the Robinson Huron Treaty and its members without free, prior and informed consent. There as been no consultation with Nipissing First Nation in general, let alone the Environment and Resources Department of Nipissing First Nation. Emails, and notifications are not consultation.
The Robinson Huron Treaty region hosts hundreds of thousands of Use and Occupancy sites utilized by the treaty members. The continued death by a thousand cuts, including the development and privatization of Treat Lands is a court case in itself laying in waiting. The removal and fast tracking of environmental regulation and due diligence also means that the mammals, fish, birds and earth and plant collecting 'habits' of First Nations are at stake. These activities effectively sustain who we are as indigenous people.
We do not consent to unilateral decisions or intention without the effort required to communicate, engage and work with First Nation on these issues. We whole heartedly reject the proposed changes to the current legislation.
