Lafarge Canada Inc - Airport Road - Changes to the conditions of a licence to operate a pit or quarry

Description of instrument

Application has been made by Lafarge Canada Inc. to vary a condition of licence 3553 to authorize a change in their licence tonnage condition. This change is necessary to accommodate a combined tonnage condition with their new licence application (625867) which is adjacent to licence 3553.

The existing condition for licence 3553 states: “The amount of aggregate excavated from this licensed property must be 1,000,000 tonnes or less in any calendar year.” The proposal is to vary the condition to state that: “The maximum number of tonnes of aggregate to be removed from the site in any calendar year is 1,000,000 tonnes, unless licence 625867 has removed aggregate in the same calendar year. Where aggregate has been removed from licence 625867 in the same calendar year as material has been removed from this licence, the total maximum number of tonnes of aggregate to be removed from the two sites combined is 1,000,000”.

Lafarge Canada Inc. operates this site under the authority of Licence #3553 under the Aggregate Resources Act.

Lafarge Canada Inc. has also applied for a Category 3 – Class A licence (625867) under the ARA to remove aggregate from above the water table. This proposed new licence is located adjacent to existing licence 3553.

Combining the tonnage condition for licence 3553 and the new licence application (625867) will not result in an increase in the amount of material annually removed from the area that is currently licensed under the ARA. This combined tonnage condition was requested by Lafarge Canada Inc. to mitigate impacts associated with increased truck traffic as part of the new licence application process.
