Following the recent publishing of the UN IPCC report regarding the effects of climate change should we fail to regulate the increase in greenhouse gas emissions, I feel the cancellation of the cap and trade program is an extremely unwarranted and erroneous decision on behalf of the provincial administration. Cancelling this program takes Ontario a step back in the progress towards reducing our impact on climate and puts global populations at risk. The cap and trade program should at least remain in place until a new, more efficient plan proposed by the Minister of Environment and provincial government can be implemented to replace it; if not, we will remain in a position that is taking no action on the extremely pressing climate issue. That would place all Ontario citizens at risk of the impeding conditions of climate change - including but not limited to food insecurity, lack of access to water, and extreme heat. I am asking decision makers to consider the long term benefits of the cap and trade program; we are in a critical time in our relationship with the environment and the policies we implement today will set standards for change in the upcoming decades.
