As a civil engineer approaching the age of 40 who drives, takes transit, cycles and walks in a major city, I'm disgusted by this proposed legislation. We should be doing everything in our power to reduce the number of cars on the roads. Ignoring climate change will not make it go away. Those in power now have a responsibility to do whatever they can to mitigate the environmental damage that is already being felt by today's young people. Building safe infrastructure for citizens who are choosing not to drive should be one of our top priorities, along with improving public transit systems. Inconveniencing drivers is a GOOD thing. Make driving a less attractive option so that people find alternative means of transport. Funnel money into initiatives that are forward thinking, not archaic, car-centric policies.
How do you want to be remembered by your children/grandchildren? As part of the problem, or part of the last ditch effort at a solution? I can't believe this is happening in 2024 in the midst of record breaking October temperatures. It feels like we're living on the set of Idiocracy.
