Given that climate change presents an extreme danger to life on Earth, and that national, provincial, state and local governments, and also the private sector, worldwide are working in collaboration to reduce emissions according to global commitments to the Paris Agreement where parties to the UNFCCC reached a landmark agreement to combat climate change and to accelerate and intensify the actions and investments needed for a sustainable low carbon future, how is it possible that a new government in Ontario can be permitted to undo the former government's work in this regard?
We in Ontario paid through our taxes for the development, consultations, passing, reports and implementation thus far of the Climate Change Mitigation and Low-carbon Economy Act, 2016 (CCMLEA). Repealing this act is a disgraceful waste of taxpayers money particularly since it is absolutely vital to do our part in taking action on climate change. We only have to review the increasing occurrence and intensity as well as the very high cost of hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, droughts, forest fires, etc., all of which have been predicted by climate scientists for years, to see the truth of this. Whatever we have in place now to reduce our impact on climate change should not be cancelled but used as a foundation for building upon and expanding, particularly in the field of green energy.
PM Trudeau announced at COP 21 in Paris, on 12 December 2015 that Canada was "back at the table" following years of absence. Everyone cheered. What is he to say now? "Canada is back at the table excepting the one-third of Canadians in Canada's most populous province"?
Please do not repeal the Climate Change Mitigation and Low-carbon Economy Act, 2016 (CCMLEA).
