My friend Alex Amaro died nearly 4 years ago because she was cycling on a busy Toronto street that did not have bike lanes where cars are permitted to go way too fast. She was not yet 25.
The fact that the country’s largest city is being threatened with this barbaric, conservative, embarrassing legislation is frankly horrifying and this city will not stand for it. Doug ford, just because Toronto doesn’t like you, it doesn’t mean you get to punish us. Bike travel is part of the FUTURE and being so hideously uneducated about bike lanes is not acceptable in 2024. Please help prevent more deaths like my friend Alex’s. There are ways for car travel and bikes to coexist peacefully and this bill will do nothing but jeopardize young lives and make more Torontonians die by cars. Please, please do not do this. Bikes are an integral form of this city’s transportation network and cyclists deserve protection. Bike lanes can be an incredible asset to the city’s infrastructure that help save lives and encourage the safe and environmentally sustainable form of transportation that is riding your bike. Ripping them up, and giving the conservative provincial government the last say as to their implementation will cause more deaths to cyclists, cause more pain for the families whose loved ones will die, and make our city less friendly, affordable, and sustainable. Please, please do not do this.
