I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed legislation that would permit the provincial government to override municipalities and remove existing bike lanes or block the future development of bike lanes.
Bike lanes are a vital component in reducing traffic congestion, offering a sustainable alternative for residents who prefer cycling over driving. In urban areas like Toronto, bike lanes help ease the pressure on our roads, making commutes smoother for everyone.
Moreover, increasing options for non-car transportation is essential for Ontario to meet its environmental goals. With climate change posing an ever-growing threat, it is imperative that we expand and enhance our cycling infrastructure, not diminish it.
Bike lanes contribute to a healthier, more sustainable urban environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting active transportation. Removing them would be a step backward in our efforts to create a livable, environmentally-conscious province.
I urge the government to reconsider this legislation and instead support initiatives that enhance our cycling infrastructure, helping Ontario become a leader in sustainable transportation and urban living.
