I would like this government to reconsider repealing the Climate Change Mitigation and Low-carbon Economy Act, 2016. The government has no viable alternative, and instead indicates in the proposal that, "The Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks is required to prepare a climate change plan and to prepare progress reports in respect of the plan." This simply delays any meaningful steps to address climate change. Given the recent UN report, which indicates that we have only TWELVE YEARS to take drastic steps to mitigate the worse of climate change, repealing the act and claiming that a plan will be developed, only slows us down.
I would ask the government to please consider the long-term implications of climate change and YOUR actions. Rather than appearing as a regressive, punitive, and head-in-the-sand government, you could work to being a climate leader, moving on plans that are established, working, and meaningful. I would also ask you to think about future generations, which I know, for some of our elected officials, means YOUR children and grandchildren. You can continue to act out petty, partisan-based fighting (which is what the cancelling of the Climate Change Mitigation and Low-carbon Economy Act, 2016 looks like) , or you can show yourselves to be leaders, forward-thinkers, and actual stewards of our planet.
I am a resident of south-eastern Ontario.
