Bike lanes reduce congestion by encouraging people to cycle instead of drive. They benefit local businesses as cyclists stop and spend more money than drivers. When installed, bike lanes see immediate use and car traffic decreases. Conversely, if bike lanes are removed and replaced with motor vehicle lanes, more drivers are encouraged, worsening congestion due to induced demand.
