Just this week the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued a dire report that we have a very limited window of time to keep warming to a max of 1.5C -- beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.
We have a very short window of time and a huge responsibility. We need to start pulling more carbon out of the atmosphere than we release....which means we need clean energy, electric transportation, reforestation and carbon capture - and changing the way markets work to account for the true cost of burning fossil fuels.
Cap-and-trade is extremely profitable for the province of Ontario and proceeds for 2018-2019 were estimated at $2 billion.
For a government that claims to be “for the people,” the decision to scrap a program that helped fund crucial public infrastructure is incomprehensible.
That $2 billion could have gone into:
* boosting energy efficiency in our homes
* improving public transit systems,
* protecting forests and agricultural areas
* supporting electric car usage
Cap-and-trade could have made a major contribution to greenhouse gas reduction.
By 2020, carbon pricing was expected to bring an 18-million-tonne decline in greenhouse gas emissions.
Cancelling this program is morally reprehensible and irresponsible.
