Removing bike lanes is a very bad idea. Research shows they aid in reducing congestion (so even if you don't bike yourself, it's still good for you). Plenty of people can't afford a car but can afford a bike and still deserve to be able to get around safely. They have been working very well here and are constantly in use. These days a lot of smaller deliveries also happen on bikes, which means removing them will make a very crucial activity in the city much harder to do and much more dangerous. Even IF removing them was a good idea (and again, it's a disastrously bad one), this overreaching power grab is not an appropriate way to accomplish that. There is no principled reason to do this at all.
