I am supportive of this proposal to extend the current moratorium on new or increasing permits to take groundwater to produce bottled water to January 1, 2020.
Permits to take water are solely within the jurisdiction of the Ontario Ministry Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. Therefore, the Ministry needs to do what is required to fully understand and appreciate the stressors affecting water resources in the province, especially regarding groundwater takings by water bottling facilities. Our current approach simply does not adequately protect our groundwater resources from wealthy private corporations.
It is critical that Ontario safeguard its water resources from depletion by private corporations. Ontario’s communities must always have a sufficient supply of safe, reliable drinking water. Every community’s water supply needs must be enough to service planned population and employment growth now and in the future.
