I am writing as a grandmother and also as a scientist and also as a fiscal conservative.
There is no doubt - we need to be transitioning to renewable energy sources as fast as possible. The oil and gas companies themselves realise this. As recently as this week the CEO of a major oil and gas company - Woodside- called for a price on carbon recognizing that it will be needed to ease the move.
The science is clear -the physical world takes no account of ideology. Newton's apple will continue to fall from the tree. If we pump CO2 into the atmosphere it will warm the planet, this will, and is, affecting the number of catastrophic weather events, the sea level will rise and the refugee problems of today will look like a pinprick, the seas will acidify, fish and food chains will be negatively affected, tropical diseases will spread into temperate climates, species wipeout will intensify with collateral damage as yet unimaginable.
As a conservative I totally oppose closing the White Pines project.
