I am commenting on the proposal for an interim combined sewer to support development at 955 LakeShore Boulevard (Ontario Place). I am opposed to the proposal which goes against decades of work by the City of Toronto to separate and replace combined sewers across the city to prevent the discharge of raw sewage into Lake Ontario. It also ignores international agreements to PROTECT WATER QUALITY and HABITAT in the Great Lakes.
This proposal to benefit private sector initiatives, is not in the public interest and threatens the stability of the lake ecosystem in a time of severe biodiversity loss.
The interim solution is not a responsible use of resources when a permanent solution is prepared.
This effluent also risks human health in terms of water quality at locations frequented as an attraction for Canadian residents and International visitors. the City of Toronto has promoted this section of lakeshore as an attractive location for active transportation, recreation, and leisure, and this proposal spends valuable resources to deteriorate the quality and safety of beaches, fishing locations and the quality of the lake ecosystem in general, for the sake of a private endeavour.
From an environmental impact standpoint, this proposal should not be approved. It should be delayed until such time as a permanent sewer separation can be achieved at this location.
