I strongly oppose the proposal for an interim combined sewer to support the Therme MegaSpa development at Ontario Place. This plan undermines decades of Toronto’s work to separate combined sewers, a critical effort to prevent raw sewage from polluting Lake Ontario. It threatens water quality, public health, and wildlife and violates international agreements to protect the Great Lakes.

The Ford government has entered a 95-year lease with Therme Canada, an Austrian-based company, to turn Ontario Place—a public park—into a private spa. This is a blatant giveaway of public assets to private interests, emblematic of Donald Trump’s and likewise Doug Ford’s pattern of misusing taxpayer dollars and public trust for corporate gain. Similar to Donald Trump’s administration, Ford’s government prioritizes the wealthy and well-connected while disregarding public input and accountability.

To accommodate Therme’s timeline, the government plans to divert a combined sewer into the West Channel for two years—an area used by swimmers, rowers, and wildlife. This rush job disregards the City of Toronto’s multi-year infrastructure plan, which would address the issue responsibly (Doug Ford cosplaying as Mayor of Toronto again). The temporary sewer redirect and the associated environmental damage will cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars, yet another example of Ford’s wasteful spending.

Doug Ford’s administration has shown time and again that they prioritize corporate profits over the wellbeing of Ontarians. This project is an environmental and financial disaster waiting to happen, and it reflects their broader agenda of grifting off public funds for private gain. It’s a class war - rich against poor — “It’s a big club, and you ain’t in it!”

I urge you to deny this permit and demand accountability for this reckless misuse of taxpayer money and public land.
