The proposal for an interim combined sewer to support development at Ontario Place is a serious error, for several reasons. One, the resulting raw sewage in the lake risks human health of swmmers at beaches, not to mention the ill effect on fish and other creatures like swans, ducks, geese, etc. whose habitat is impaired. International agreements protecting the Great Lakes are being violated if this proposal goes forward.
Prioritizing a private initiative to benefit a small number of people at the expense of the millions of people in Ontario and our southern neighbours who rely on clean water, while incidentallly threatening the stability of the lake ecosystem in a time of severe biodiversity loss, is not just myopic but demonstates willful blindness of the egregious consequences, and the added slap in the face to the citizens of Ontario is that millions of tax payer dollars are supporting Therme, the private company that the provincial government has a contract with. The permit for a combined sewer must be denied. Public consultations should also be held before this proposed development continues.
