I am writing to formally oppose the proposed development of a landfill site within 1 kilometre of Dresden. While the need for effective waste management is acknowledged, the location of this landfill poses serious risks and concerns that must not be overlooked. Below are the key reasons for this objection:

1. Health Risks to Residents

Landfills are known sources of air, water, and soil pollution. Gases such as methane, hydrogen sulfide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from decomposing waste can cause respiratory problems, nausea, headaches, and other health issues. Proximity to such emissions puts the entire town’s population, including vulnerable groups like children and the elderly, at direct risk.

2. Water Contamination

Even with modern lining and leachate management systems, landfills carry the inherent risk of leachate leakage. This can contaminate groundwater and nearby surface water bodies, which may be sources of drinking water or used for agricultural purposes. Any breach could have long-term consequences for public health and local food safety.

3. Negative Impact on Property Values and Livability

The presence of a landfill so close to a residential area will almost certainly lead to a decline in property values. The potential for foul odors, increased pest activity, and aesthetic degradation makes the area less attractive for current and prospective residents. Over time, this could impact the town’s growth and economic viability.

4. Environmental and Wildlife Concerns

The landfill could disrupt local ecosystems in the nearby river.

5. Traffic and Safety Issues

Landfills bring a significant increase in heavy vehicle traffic. This can cause wear and tear on local roads, increase noise pollution, and pose safety risks for pedestrians and school children, particularly in small towns not designed to handle such volume.

6. Better Alternatives Exist

There are alternative waste management strategies and locations that would minimize the impact on residential populations. Sites further from towns, enhanced recycling programs, and waste-to-energy options should be explored before resorting to placing a landfill in such a sensitive location.

Placing a landfill within 1 kilometer of our town is an unacceptable risk to public health, safety, property values, and environmental integrity. I urge decision-makers to reject this proposal and seek alternatives that do not place the wellbeing of our community in jeopardy.

Lastly, the lack of transparency and deviation from previously stated procedures would only heighten concern and opposition. The community was previously assured that a full environmental assessment would be conducted prior to any decision being made. Now, attempts to bypass or fast-track this crucial step not only undermine public confidence but also raise serious questions about accountability and due process. Any decision that disregards a full environmental review would be seen as a betrayal of public trust.

Thank you and please help us and do what is right.
