The proposed changes are not clarifying or streamlining the existing act- they are creating a system where science-based decision making can be summarily dismissed by government and industry can begin breaking ground on proposed projects without proper procedures to safeguard species. The amended definition of a habitat effectively ignores the impact of habitat fragmentation, which is a primary driver of declines in many at-risk species.
These changes cannot go through. It would undo decades of work on protecting Ontario's biodiversity.
