Message sent to my MPP's office:
I strongly oppose this new proposal of Bill 5 “Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act”. It not only dismantles essential protections for endangered wildlife and ecosystems, but also disregards the rights and sovereignty of Indigenous communities.
This bill represents a profound failure of responsible governance. It ignores the urgent environmental challenges we face, undermines science-based conservation efforts, and violates the principles of meaningful consultation with Indigenous Peoples as required by both Canadian law and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Our natural heritage and the rights of Indigenous Peoples are not obstacles to development—they are foundational to a just and sustainable future. Any legislation that affects land, water, and biodiversity must be developed transparently and collaboratively with full participation from Indigenous nations and impacted communities. This bill does the exact opposite.
I urge this government to withdraw this legislation and engage in genuine consultation with Indigenous leaders, scientists, environmental experts, and the public. Protecting endangered species is not optional—it is our moral and legal obligation.
Our government's insistence on short-sighted destruction for quick gains for the current generation is a terrible legacy to leave behind for the future generations who will ultimately be left dealing with the bulk of the rapidly-increasing economic cost that continually interfering with the critical parts of our natural spaces (that protect us from floods and other natural disasters) intact brings.
Over the years, I have reached out to your office regarding this party's other various attempts to erode environmental protections etc., and have always received a disingenuous response that is clearly cut-and-paste and does not actually address the points I bring up.
I am not interested in receiving such a patronizing response yet again, so I do not require a response to this, but I appreciate you adding my comments to the other Ontarians who are speaking up about this issue.
Please do the right thing for future generations. Please consider the long-term impacts that this bill would have.
