I'm still trying to understand how the Conservative position on the environment has simply become "wanton, unmitigated destruction in the pursuit of capital." In the past, Conservative governments at least paid lip service to the idea of protected lands and conservation, but now---as the Ford government has demonstrated again and again, as with the Greenbelt scandal---they openly celebrate its destruction, if only because the "other side" cares about it.
Let me be clear: we are in the midst of a mass extinction event. The failure to protect endangered species will only hasten this calamity, as will the destruction of our ecosystems. Even the most craven of capitalists should understand the basic reality that no capital can be gleaned from an environment that is utterly devastated.
Our endangered species list protects biodiversity that is vital to the health of the planet, and indeed, the human race. It may not seem like these changes will make a huge impact, but it's the constant, low-level attacks on environmental protectionism that make the difference, and this is one of them. Listen to scientists. Prioritize evidence over rhetoric. The evidence is clear; it's politics that muddies the waters. Protecting the environment should be not be political; it is the mandate of every government, regardless of their party affiliation.
