Regarding the proposed changes to Species Act 2007 to create Species Conservation Act 2025, there are several serious problems that will be introduced with this legislation. These problems relate to limiting habitat definitions to smaller, less realistic areas of animal activity; reducing the number of listed species at risk; reducing the oversight of environmental assessment in favour of "unleashing" developer projects; broadly ignoring the long-term impact of environmental degradation by removing protective status of several natural preserves; and disregarding the irreversible effects of broadening urbanization into natural habitats in Ontario.
The effects of bulldozing ahead with these changes to facilitate rapid housing development will largely NOT BENEFIT the lower income, housing-constrained people of Ontario. Wiping out species at risk through rapid development is a sickening legacy to leave to next generations that will not be able to bring species back from extirpation.
This proposed legislation features willful disconnection from non-monetized prosperity AND refuses to recognize that healthy environments with species diversity directly correlate with healthy human habitats, longevity and mental health.
