It seems like the proposal to redefine how habitat is classified leaves it wide open to greatly reduce critical areas for protected species with little consideration for wildlife corridors or connected green space. The green space in southern Ontario is already disappearing at an alarming rate. We should be looking to create wildlife and green space corridors to complement development in a sustainable way (Charlotte, North Carolina is a great example of how neighborhoods are among and connected by green ways, with thriving owl populations right in their neighbourhoods) and the removal of the "red tape" the endangered species act currently provides seems like it will just make it easier for Ford, who already doesn't care about the environment as evidenced by the proposal of highway 413, to just destroy even more of our green space. I'm scared for the future of our wildlife and green spaces. This proposal seems to create smoke and mirrors to make it sound like species will be protected, but in reality it appears it'll just make development easier as proper EPAs will not be undertaken with the change to habitat definition. Why doesn't the government embrace and nurture what little green space Southern Ontario has left? Scary and sad.
