This bill is the death of archaeology in Ontario. I’ve been a practicing archaeologist for many years, with a long future ahead of me. I’ve spent almost a decade in higher education, thousands of dollars on education for archaeology & this bill absolutely shreds any possibility of working in the field. The projects that CRM firms do are an essential crux in heritage and development - our projects allow for traditional Indigenous knowledge and Ontario history to be preserved and shared, while allowing for the development of housing, transit systems and healthcare facilities. If this bill gets passed, it bypasses all of the work that we’ve put into our education and careers. It bypasses and ignores the rich history that Ontario holds. It blatantly ignores and dismisses Indigenous peoples, which this country seems to be good at. Why bypass the essential work that we’ve been doing - harming no one, other than putting a small dent in mega developers’ pockets?
