The amendment to exempt property from an archaeological assessment is horrible. The requirements are too vague and are very subjective. The worst part of these proposed amendments is the contradictory idea that property will not be considered for exemption if there is a significant archaeological site, when those significant sites might go undetected and get destroyed by these exemptions, which waive the archaeological assessments. How can Indigenous communities protect their cultural sites if we take away the assessments that reveal them? Consultation with Indigenous peoples should have started with the bill itself, and the bill should be halted until this consultation has occurred.
