Between my son and I, we have 500 acres of farmland that runs up Marthaville and along Molly’s Creek, which all drains into the creek. A few years ago, we contacted the municipality about a bridge that needed to be replaced, and we were told it couldn’t be done because of the endangered mussels living in the creek. So why was something as simple as a bridge not allowed, but now a company wants to place a massive landfill here that could potentially drain toxic substances into the same creek — threatening not only the endangered species but also the entire river system?

This area is in a known floodplain — we witness it flood every single year. There is no question that water from the landfill site would eventually make its way into Molly’s Creek during these flood events. This puts the entire watershed at risk of contamination, including farmland and aquatic ecosystems downstream.

These rural roads cannot support up to 700 trucks a day. The dishes in our house already rattle when a single transport truck goes by — and now we’re talking about hundreds daily? The peaceful life we’ve built would be destroyed. We live 7,000 feet from the proposed landfill entrance and were never consulted. This would drastically affect the lives of our entire family — our kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who all live and farm here.

This is a strong agricultural area that must be protected. We’re deeply worried about pollution, the smell from potential residential garbage (which they are now talking about accepting), and the dangers from increased truck traffic. My brother is a truck driver — Toronto drivers are not used to our slow traffic and rural roads. We have tractors and farm equipment on the roads constantly, especially during tomato harvest when you’re often stuck behind multiple at once. This kind of traffic will inevitably lead to accidents or worse — especially with two schools and school bus routes nearby.
