As a concerned resident of Ontario, I strongly oppose the proposed Special Economic Zones Act, 2025. While economic growth and strategic development are important, this legislation represents a dangerous erosion of environmental oversight, democratic accountability, and long-term sustainability.
By enabling the government to bypass existing regulations and streamline approvals for vetted projects, this proposal opens the door to unchecked industrial development at the expense of ecosystems, communities, and Indigenous rights. The vague definitions of “trusted proponents” and “critical or strategic importance” create loopholes that could be exploited by corporate interests with little regard for environmental protection or public input.
Ontario is already facing a biodiversity crisis, with over 230 species at risk. Fast-tracking development without thorough environmental review and community consultation will only deepen this crisis. Wetlands, forests, and watersheds that would fall within these “special zones” provide essential ecosystem services such as clean air, flood mitigation, and climate resilience. Once degraded or destroyed, these ecosystems cannot be easily restored, and the costs to Ontarians will be significant and long-lasting.
Furthermore, removing or altering permitting requirements and public transparency processes undermines public trust in government. Ontarians deserve to have a say in decisions that will reshape their landscapes and communities. The current proposal does not provide adequate safeguards or clarity to ensure accountability and environmental integrity.
I urge the government to withdraw this proposal and instead invest in economic development strategies that prioritize environmental sustainability, meaningful public engagement, and the protection of Ontario’s natural heritage.
Sincerely,
A concerned Ontarian
