I’m writing to strongly oppose the proposed landfill near Dresden, Ontario. As highlighted by Environmental Defence, this project threatens sensitive ecosystems, species at risk, and clean water — all for the convenience of expanding waste disposal in the province. The site is dangerously close to the Sydenham River, one of the most biodiverse rivers in Canada and home to over 80 species of fish and 34 species of freshwater mussels, many of which are endangered. This is not just a local issue — it’s a matter of protecting one of Ontario’s most critical and sensitive habitats.
Building a landfill on this site could result in toxic runoff during flooding, which happens regularly in this area. That pollution would flow into Molly’s Creek and ultimately the Sydenham River, threatening wildlife and drinking water. It’s shameful that the government is even considering removing the requirement for a full Environmental Assessment, when the risks are so high and the community so strongly opposed.
Environmental Defence made it clear: this project doesn’t meet the standards of environmental responsibility, and it clearly contradicts Ontario’s own commitments to conservation. Please do the right thing — keep the full Environmental Assessment, and reject this proposal before irreversible damage is done to both the people and the ecosystems that depend on this land and water.
